Some history.

The Tyrnavo's carnival is a tradition with more than 100 years of history. The locals say the tradition revives the ancient greek fiestas: Dionysia, Thesmoforia, Afrodisia, Thargilia, or that it was started from the Arvanites race who settled in Tyrnavos around 1770.

What's so special about it?

The Phallos, small dicks or anything made of dicks or carrys a dick.

What is the Bourani of Tyrnavos?

"Burani"means the local fiesta, but in real terms it is the fiest of Phallos and it resebles reproduction and birth. Thousands of people are masquarades and like this they fill the streets of the city, dancing, singing, and enjoying themselves until the morning comes.

Clean Monday (Bourani)

What's the deal for this day?

The ritual of this traditional fiesta starts on Clean Monday (40 days before easter) from the "Profitis Ilias" area in Tyrnavos. At Profitis ilias many teams of people gather and each of the team prepare food and a huge bottle of wine or ouzo or tsipouro which is made in the shape of a Phallos. Not bad, ha? Meanwhile they light fireplaces all around and they make the Bourani soup, which is made of spinach and vinegar. Everybody is participating in this fiesta of songs, quotes and dirty talk. Many guys hold Phallos in their hands like swords, made of wood, pot, or even bread (!).

Why do they use Phallos?

Phallos is a ritual symbol. It is used as an aversing symbol against the bad, the jelousy, or the punishment. It is thought to have a magical power based on its striking power.
