Time for a quiz ... In which city in Greece can you drink coffee at Syntagma Square and gaze at the building of the first parliament? Where should you encounter the first drugstore in Greece, or the first Academy, or the throne of the king inside the Metropolitan church?
In the capital, of course! The first capital of the Greek state: Nafplio.
The town of Naplio is an actual wandering during history of the newly established Greek state. Narrow streets with old aristocratic mansions, small balconies dressed with bougainvilleas and many places of historical interest. Starting from the archaeological museum, which houses the findings of the Mycenaean culture that flourished in the region, or Agios Spyridon church where even today you can see the point the first Governor of Greece dropped dead. So many historic treasures in such a beautiful city.
The most enjoyable thing in Nafplion is that history coexists harmoniously with the contemporary reality. The narrow streets are full of charming cafes, bars, restaurants and among them monuments, mansions and museums are placed. People come and go all day and night, as the nightlife keeps until the early hours.
So convince your friends to rent the famous four-seater bikes and wander around. If you’re the athletic type, get yourself up the steps of Palamidi to admire the city from above or try the pedestrian walkway of Arvanitia that surrounds the rock of Upper Nafplio.
Whatever you will choose the beauty of this city will enchant you!
