Well, we arrived in Kerkini! What do we do now? What activities are there? Where to go? Whom to consult? How much does it cost? Does it worth it?

All these questions were solved without many words from Nick, the owner of the Limnaion Guesthouse and our local angel. Boat trip yes, bike ride yes, 4x4 quite overpriced and horse riding yes. So we started with the boat trip. We were in search for Captain Chris who docks his boat in Lithotopos village. Boating in Lake Kerkini lasts 45 minutes and costs 5 euros per person.

Captain Chris answered all our questions about the Lake, the birds, the fish and Mpeles Mountain mirrored in the waters. We enjoyed the amazing ride, browse through many birds that hunt their food and listened to him in delight. From what he told us i held the following:

  • The Cormorant dives up to 10 meters in the lake and 33 meters in the sea to hunt for his food - it has a black color, it needs 1.5 kg fish a day and is the enemy of the fishermen. The Cormorant has to open his wings to drie them as it lacks a common bird substance that auto-dries theis wings.
  • The fishermen of Lithotopos have to watch their makeshift fish huts all day otherwise the fish caught in their nets, the so-called drums will be devoured by hundreds of cormorants.
  • Pelicans have a wing width of 2.5 m and eat 2.5 kg of fish a day.
  • Lake Kerkini during winter diminishes and the level goes down. During the summer it can rise up to 4.5 meters to meet the irrigation needs of the surrounding area.
  • During the makings of Angelopoulos's film "The Weeping Meadow" an entire village was built of cobs and bricks to cover the film needs. Now you can only see some ruins of the scenery as the building were cover with water and began to dissolve because of the mud as their main ingredient.
  • In 1928, Venizelos government, built the first dam to hold the waters of the Strymon river and help form the lake.

The fish that can be found in Lake Kerkini are: carp, eel, sheatfish, trout and others I do not remember. Captain Chris explicitly said, "Do not leave Kerkini without tasting carp fish at the fisherman's villages in the area," but we didn't follow his request. Never mind, next time!

Have you ever tryed the carp of Kerkini? Tell us all about it!
