The Volcanological Museum of Nisyros was launched in 2008 and is the first Volcanological Museum of Greece.
I was created by the Municipality of Nisyros in collaboration with the AU of IGME and the Ministry of the Aegean.
Located in the village of Nikia the museum is open all around the year and is housed in an old abandoned school that was redesigned for the needs of the museum. It features both modern and exhibition halls of rocks and other findings.
The main rooms of the Museum host the following topics:
§ Origin and structure of volcanoes
§ Volcanic processes and products
§ Volcanoes of Greece
§ The volcano of Nisyros
§ The other active volcanoes in Greece
§ Volcanoes - Environment - Human
A section of the museum houses the Information, observation and experiment space. In this area i found the collection of all rocks of Nisyros and other active volcanoes, which i could observe macroscopically and microscopically, as there are the appropriate microscopes for various volcanic rocks.
There is also a library with a rich collection of books and articles of volcanic interest and other fields of the science. There are also simulations of volcanic eruptions both available on PCs and other experimental devices that suit younger guests.
